WLA Scholarship Application 2010
GENERAL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS
The Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater St. Louis has awarded scholarships to deserving law students since 1996. The Scholarship is currently administered by WLA's charitable arm - The Women Lawyer's Association Foundation. Scholarships generally range from $1000 to $6000 depending on the amount of funds available in any given year and the number of recipients chosen by the selection committee at its discretion. The WLAF scholarship committee reviews applications and selects one or more recipients to recommend to the WLAF Board of Directors for approval of the award disbursement.
The scholarship fund was named after Linda J. Murphy after her death in 1999. Linda served as WLA’s president in 1987-1988. Throughout her life, she was an advocate of the rights of women and minorities. She was a prominent and respected trial attorney known for her criminal defense, civil rights, and domestic relations work. She taught trial practice at law schools in St. Louis and elsewhere and handled pro bono cases for the ACLU. In 1999, Linda received the Atticus Finch Award, the highest award of honor from the Missouri Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. Linda’s memory continues to inspire women attorneys dedicated to the rights of women and the advancement of women in the legal profession.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must be part-time or full-time female law students.
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Missouri law school and must be committed to continue law school enrollment in the fall semester following the award.
Selection Criteria:
- The Linda J. Murphy Scholarship is intended to recognize students who have dedicated themselves in a significant way to advancing the quality of life and stature in our society of women through community service or otherwise.
